This book is a collection of rare images of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) at his home, Ainola. Sibelius disliked being photographed, so there are few pictures of him. The images presented in this book have been pulled from black and white films entitled "Sibelius at Home", which were made by Aho & Soldan in 1927 and in 1945, when Sibelius celebrated his 80th birthday.
The film stills are grainy, but full of life and personality, showing Sibelius walking outdoors, cane in hand, or smoking a cigar at the piano. His wife Aino and two of his daughters, Heidi and Margareta, are also depicted.
The book also includes seven articles, in English, Finnish and Swedish, in which the authors' perspectives on Sibelius are shaped by the documentary films.
