The Sami People: Traditions in Transition is an excellent introduction to the Sami. This richly illustrated book gives a broad overview of Sami history and traditional culture, and also considers the Sami as participants in modern society, as well as examining recent trends in Sami arts and culture.
Author Veli-Pekka Lehtola, senior research fellow at the Giellagas Institute at the University of Oulu (Finland), makes the argument that accomodating internal and external changes is nothing novel to the Sami. Rather, the dialogue between traditional and modern is a natural part of the maintenance of Sami cultural distinctness, and has led to the evolution of new kinds of Sami participation and activism in politics, the media, and the arts.
