The Winter War began in 1939 as the Soviet Union invaded Finland, demanding Finnish territory. One million Soviet troops attacked Finland on several fronts, an impossible situation in which underdog Finland put up a brave defense. Antti Tuuri's novel The Winter War describes the events through the eyes of an infantry soldier called to the front from his home in rural Ostrobothnia. Drawing from soldiers' diaries and interviews, the novel gives a vivid and realistic portrayal of the Winter War.
The Winter War, first published in 1984, is a modern classic, and a must-read for fans of Finnish literature or war literature. It was also the basis of the 1989 film The Winter War, released on the fiftieth anniversary of the conflict. Author Antti Tuuri has been the recipient of the Nordic Council's Literature Prize and the Finlandia Prize.
